Emporiblog - Candle Magic Colours
Hello all!! Today's post is all about candles and what their corresponding colours mean. Candle magic has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years and constantly evolving yet, one of these candle traditions has persisted into the modern era. Ever made a wish and blown out the candles on a cake? Yep, that's candle magic 😉 Basic spell candles are standard candles about 4 inches tall and half an inch wide (see above) and each colour corresponds to a magical use.
White
White is considered a master colour, meaning that it can be substituted for any colour you don't specially have. It can also be used for cleansing and purification. If you're using white for a stand in try to have something of the colour you want it to represent nearby or very carefully carve the colour name into the candle. White can also be used in moon rituals.
Black
A lot of people think black candles are associated with " dark/black magic" and warn against using them but this is an uneducated bunch of nonsense. Black candles can in fact be used for good, such as, protection rituals, uncrossing and warding off negativity. (If you choose to use a black candle in a hex, remember what you cast will return 3 fold!!)
Green
Green is the colour of Earth and growth. It can also be used in money spells/rituals to bring luck with money or a business venture and it can be used for fertility.
Purple
Purple can be used for getting in touch with your intuition. It's also good for adding a boost to creativity. Purple can also be used to boost psychic abilities.
Pink
Pink is the colour we associate the most with love and can be used for self care. It can be used to nurture a relationship and bring empathy and understanding and also bring healing to the relationship in question. (Separate post on love spells at a later date)
Red
Red can also be used for relationship rituals, mainly for passion as it's a stronger colour than pink. It can also be used for energy and strength. If you need an extra boost for a tough task ongoing or ahead, red is the colour to use.
Orange
Orange is another one for creativity, especially those with writer's block!! I would also use this for Autumn rituals since orange is associated with the time of the year especially Samhain.
Yellow
Yellow is for abundance and joy. It can be used in rituals/spells to help someone battling depression or if you're just going through a rough patch and need a little ray of sunshine. I would also use this in spring/summer rituals along with green. Yellow is also used to represent air.
Blue
Blue connects your chakras and can help with emotional healing. It can also be used for peace, protection, wisdom and inspiration. Blue is also the colour of water.
Brown
Brown is used for help with resources like health, energy, possessions, pets endurance and courage. If you find yourself short of something, light a brown candle and ask for help. They can also be used with green candles for Earth rituals/spells.
Ivory
Ivory/Cream coloured candles are the candles of opulence. Burn a green and an ivory candle together at the same time to attract wealth/fortune, abundance, and luxury/opulent items! Also use when carrying out full moon rituals, or when you want to call upon deities associated with the moon/stars.
There are many more colours but I thought I'd stick to the most commonly used ones so you don't get overwhelmed!! If you think of a specific colour that you would like to be added to the list, please let us know in the comments!! We currently have a limited supply of spell candles on our website (Link at the bottom) so head over there while stocks last 😉
Budget witch tip
If you're on a budget or in a hurry, stop at your local store and purchase some birthday cake candles, they're about the right size, plus you can get a few at a time!
There will be further posts on candle magic covering topics from the basics to more advanced tips so keep your eyes peeled!!
Never leave a candle unattended and keep under constant supervision!!
