Symbol Series - Pentagram

Hello all!! I'm getting back on track and we ARE starting our Symbol Series with the Pentagram!! (picture from Google).

Since this is the first in the series, I'll be using this to test layouts. I will always be spacing these out as a lot of research needs to go into these!

So, let's start......

History

The Pentagram is a very ancient symbol that (as some records suggest) has been used since 3000 BCE , with evidence from Mesopotamia, the Babylonians, Ancient Greece, China, Japan and Ethiopia, just to name a few. It's meaning and representation varied from civilisation to civilisation and also changed over time. Believe it or not, the Pentagram was also used in Christianity. Here, it represented the 5 Wounds of Christ as well as the concept of Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, as the Pentagram is supposed to be drawn in one motion.

Meanings

Here are a few meanings that have been attached to the Pentagram over the millennia:

- For the Jewish faith, the Pentagram points represent justice, mercy, wisdom, understanding and transparent splendor

- The Sumerians used the Pentagram for astrological purposes to represent the Vault of Heaven, with each point representing one of the following planets, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn and Venus

- Pythagoras (the Ancient Greek person who made maths more complicated!) saw the Pentagram as a representation of the 4 basic elements (Earth, Fire, Water and Air,) with the top point representing spirit

- In Witchcraft, the Pentagram is mostly used as a symbol of protection and a representation of the elements and spirit. It can also represent a Deity (more on that later) as several Deities have correspondences to the Pentagram

- In Japan, the Pentagram is a symbol of power and also has links to the Onmyōji (specialist in magic and divination) Abe no Seimei

- The Chinese also use the Pentagram as a representation of elements but, the 5 Chinese elements are Earth, Air, Water, Wood and Metal

- The Pentagram is also said to represent Spirit over Matter

Inverted Meaning

The concept of the inverted Pentagram didn't really exist until the 19th century when Eliphas Levi published a book which said that an inverted Pentagram was evil and represented matter over spirit. Alistair Crowley then solidified this concept, which has been further enforced by Hollywood and pop culture.

For the Church of Satan, the inverted Pentagram represents is adoptive Deity Baphomet, with the 2 points at the top being the horns of Baphomet.

The inverted Pentagram also has a place in the Gardnerian branch of Wicca. If a practitioner wears an inverted Pentagram, it means that they have achieved the second Deg of initiation.

Trivia

- From 300 to 150 BCE, the Pentagram was the official seal of Jerusalem

- The Pentagram is also the official symbol of the BahΓ‘'Γ Faith, which is a religion that was founded in the 19th century in Persia

I think we'll leave this here! I want these posts to be informative but I also don't want to bombard you with lots of information!

As this is a new series (finally!) if you have any feedback, let me know!

Blessings,
