Emporiblog - Elements

Hello all!! Today's post is about the 4 key elements and how they play a role in the magical path. These elements are everywhere. Water makes up a large percentage of the human body, we need liquids to survive and life on Earth started with the oceans. Air is obvious, without it we couldn't breathe and on a warm day, a breeze is more than welcomed!! Earth is where we draw our energy from, where we grow our food from and where nature flourishes, without Earth there would be no planet. Fire. Fire brings us heat and allows us fend off those bitter cold nights, it allows us to cook our food but, in the wrong hands Fire is devastating. Therefore it must be respected.

For hundreds of years, we have called on one or more of these elements to help in rituals/spells, from harvest rituals to house cleansing, we'd be lost without them. In this post, I'll provide a guide on how to call on the elements, how to represent them and how to thank them.

Water

Let's start with an easy one. Water is normally represented by the colour blue in various different shades so having something blue on your alter or close to you when calling apon it. It can also be represented by a literal bowl of water or some kind of chalice or drinking receptacle (empty or not). If you're not comfortable having something with water in it on a surface, a sea shell will suffice. Water and other liquids can also be left in thanks for deities if that is the offering that specific deity requires.
To call on water, you must first know why you are calling apon it. For the purposes of this, we'll call apon water for its cleansing powers. Once you've set up your space and made sure you have everything you need, you can begin. I would say something along these lines,

"I call apon the element of Water. Please lend me your cleansing powers."

You can repeat this as many times as you feel necessary. At the end of the ritual/spell, we must give thanks, something along these lines,

"I thank the element of Water for the use of its powers and return the borrowed energy."

Earth

Earth can be represented by the colours Green and Brown in various shades. You can physically represent Earth with:

- Stones
- Crystals
- Clay
- Wood
- Sand
- Soil
If you use sand or soil, I'd recommend putting them on a clay dish as far back as possible to avoid spillages. Those listed above can also be left as offerings.
Calling on Earth, can be done either outside or inside depending on the weather/where you live. If you're outside, make sure you can touch one of the items listed above (bring something to clean your hands with if necessary). For the purposes of this, we'll ask the Earth to share its energy with something along the lines of the following,

"I ask the Earth to share its energy. Please spare what you can." Repeat if necessary. Once you've made your request, relax and open yourself to receive the extra energy you need. To thank, simply repeat the step above and say,

"I thank the Earth for the energy I received. I return that which I do not need." Relax and allow your energy to flow into the Earth.

To do this inside, perform the steps above whilst holding your physical representation of Earth.

Fire

Fire is normally represented with the colour Red in varying shades. To physically represent, use a candle, a match (unlit), a lighter or a piece of coal. Candles in various colours and scents can be left as offerings. As always, be careful with flammable materials!! For the purposes of this, we'll be calling on Fire to assist in candle magic. Once you have everything ready, say something along these lines,

"I invoke the element of Fire. Please lend your power to my ritual/spell."

To thank, light a candle with the intention of thanks and say,

"I thank the element of Fire for your assistance. May this flame carry my thanks to the universe." After a while, snuff out the candle.

Air

Air is normally represented with the colour Yellow in various shades. To physically represent, use a feather of your choice, light an incense or use a figurine of a windmill or bird. Incense and feathers can be left as offerings. Since Air can be invoked for many purposes, we'll be going with communication. To call, say something like,

"I call apon the element of Air. Please give power to my voice and breath."

To thank,

"I thank the element of Air for its power, now I breathe it back to you." Take as many deep breaths as you feel necessary to release the excess energy back to Air.

Everyone has their own way of addressing/calling on the elements, it's perfectly ok to make this your own as every path is personal.

As always, be careful of your surroundings and watch flammable materials very closely!! I hope you find this guide useful!!

Stay safe and hydrated in the heat!!

Blessings,
