New Moon
Hello all!! Tonight's New Moon (UK) will be in Cancer ♋. This is a time for manifesting intentions, relaxation, reflection and meditation. Everyone does their own thing for a New Moon ritual, from meditating for hours to taking a cleansing bath, there's no right or wrong way to celebrate the New Moon! In this post, I'll be providing a rough overview of possible things to do.
Meditation
Now I understand that meditation isn't for everyone and that those who meditate have their own ways of doing it. As long as you're relaxed, you're doing it right! The following is just a rough guide.
- For a meditation the first thing I would do is find/clear a space. If you wish to cleanse the space before you continue, now would be the time to do it. (There will be a separate post on cleansing coming soon!!)
- Make sure you have everything you need. Incense/oils, music, candles, a safe surface to put your things on and whichever other items you wish to use. Make sure any oils you use are safe to use around pets if you have any!
- Light your incense, oils and candles. Use relaxing incense/oils, meditation incense/oils, intention incense/oils or any scent you like as long as you find it relaxing. I would recommend lavender or sage.
- Set up your music if you want to use any. This can be music specially for meditation or music you find relaxing. There are pre-made playlist available online if you don't have time to make one yourself.
- Get comfortable. Take a few deep breaths, clear your mind and begin your meditation.
Charging your items
During specific times, you can use the energy from a Luna event, eclipse or planetary alignment to cleanse/charge magical items. With the New Moon, it's a good time to cleanse/charge: - Crystals
- Tarot/Angel cards
- Rune sets
- Alter items
- Water
You can do this either by leaving the items in a safe place outside or on your window ledge. Since the UK's weather is unpredictable and it tends to rain a lot, I would recommend putting the items on the window ledge.
Clearing your home
A New Moon means a new beginning in the lunar cycle. This is also a good time to go through what you have in your home, rearrange your spaces and evaluate the importance of your belongings. Belongings that you no longer feel an attachment to or are no longer needed can start a new life of their own. Depending on what they are, you can sell them, give them away or donate them. What you no longer need could be something that someone else is missing. If you're unsure about giving up an item, hide it (make a note!) and wait a while. If you forget about it entirely, then it's time to let go. If you remember the item after a short while, it's meant to stay with you a while longer.
Send thanks to deities
Not everyone worships or works regularly with deities. Some people only call on them in times of need or for ritual/spell work and that's ok! Regardless of how you work with them, now is a good time to ask for guidance and give thanks for all the help you have received. It is important to give thanks to deities in exchange for their energies. Each one has their own specifications so do your research to make sure you are honouring them correctly!
Crystals
As with any time of the year, there are specific crystals linked to the New Moon. Here is a list of one's that I managed to find.
- Labradorite
- Smoky Quartz
- Black Obsidian
- Moonstone
- Citrine
- Clear Quartz
- Carnelian
- Blue Kyanite
- Rhodonite
- Pink Opal
- Lapis Lazul
I have no doubt that there are others that could be added to this list along with each person's personal favourites.
Herbs
As with crystals, different herbs corresponde with different events. Below is a list of herbs for the New Moon.
- Rosemary
- Sage
- Thyme
- Basil
- Mint
- Chives
- Bay Leaves
- Parsley
Everyone has their own herbal preference. I know from experience that some herbs/spices need to be substituted due to availability and allergies.
Ritual ideas
Rituals are a very personal practices. Some go by the book and some do what they feel is right. I've compiled a list of ritual ideas for those who are new to magical practices or are stuck for ideas.
- Clean/organise alter/space. It is important to make sure that your sacred space(s) are organised and cleansed. You may want to change the items to fit the time of year/month. Replace any offerings/perishable items such as water, incense and oils. If your sacred space is outside, make sure your dressed appropriately and are prepared for any weather changes!
- Manifest Intentions. You can do this in a number of ways such as using a candle. To do this, light the candle, speak your intentions aloud to it, blow/snuff out and let the smoke carry your intentions to the universe. Another way is burning written intentions. Write your intentions down on paper. Visualize the intentions as you write them, hold the paper in your hand then, (as safely as possible and preferably in a well ventilated area!!) burn the paper in a fire/heatproof receptacle. Visualize your intentions for the final time as the smoke carries them away. You can also keep the ashes for future rituals/spells. Lastly, the easiest way, speak your intentions out loud. As long as your intentions are pure, you can speak them aloud. Visualize and repeat your intentions as many times as you need to. If you're invoking and deities, be sure to give thanks!
Write in your journal
Be it a random book or a Book Of Shadows, a journal is an important tool for magically inclined people. Your journal is a place for you to document your journey on your chosen path. This is just a rough guide of things to write down but do whatever feels right for you!
- Any dreams you can remember
- Any rituals you performed
- Any spells you made/performed
- Any emotions you felt
- How this New Moon feels compared to the previous
I hope you've enjoyed this overview of the New Moon!! If there is anything I've missed or anything you'd like me to add, please don't hesitate to get in touch!!
