Emporiblog - Friday 13th
Hello again!! Welcome to our first double feature! Since our Flora Friday was a bit short this week, we decided to treat you to an extra post!
As you know, today is Friday 13th, a day that some consider bad luck so, let's take a look and see why people think today is unlucky!
A Friday 13th happens when a month begins on a Sunday. It is possible for someone to have a fear of the number 13, this is called Triskaidekaphobia (not a fear of Triscuits!). Whereas fear of Friday 13th has 2 names, Paraskevidekatriaphobia or Friggatriskaidekaphobia. While the number 12 has been associated with Completeness in western culture (12 days of Christmas, 12 Zodiac signs and months, 12 Gods of Olympus etc) 13 quite literally, hasn't been so lucky!
In the Bible, 13 people attended the last supper, the 13 being Jesus and his 12 Disciples, one of whom (Judas) would eventually betray him, this lead to Jesus being crusified on Good Friday. As such, having 13 dinner guests at a table is considered unlucky and a bad omen, specifically one that courts death. Friday is also said to be the day that Adam gave Eve the apple and Cain killed his brother Able.
There are other events that have taken place on Friday 13th that have solidified its unlucky reputation for some, let's have a look-see:
- 1307 October 13th - King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of hundreds of members of the Knights Templar. Many of these Templars were later executed
- 1829 November 13th - America's first professional daredevil Sam Patch jumped to his death in the Genesee River
- 1940 September 13th - the Germans bombed Buckingham Palace
- 1951 July 13th - Kansas experienced record rainfall that caused severe floods
- 1953 June 13th - Swedish flight DC-3 vanished whilst flying over the Baltic Sea
- 1964 March 13th - Kitty Genovese was murdered in Queens, New York
- 1970 November 13th - a cyclone killed more than 300,000 people in Bangladesh
- 1972 October 13th - a Chilean Air Force plane disappeared in the Andes. On the same day, Russian plane, Aeroflot 217 crashed while trying to land, killing everyone onboard
- 1989 January 13th - a computer virus swept across the UK, deleting files, specifically one's created on that day and slowed computers down
- 1989 October 13th - the stock market experienced a mini crash, costing a lot of people a lot of money
- 1996 September 13th - the murder of Tupac Shakur
- 2006 October 12th-13th - Buffalo NY was hit by a freak blizzard, causing over 300,000 people to be without power as well as damaging thousands of trees
- 2010 August 13th - a boy was struck by lightning at 13 minutes past one in the afternoon or 13:13pm
- 2012 January 13th - the cruise ship Costa Concordia crashed off the coast of Italy, killing 30
I'm sure there are many more but you get the idea.
However, Friday 13th used to be considered lucky. It was a day to honour and draw from the divine feminine power within and connect with your inner goddess but in 1487 Heinrich Kramer decided that divine feminine power should be repressed and labeled it as witchcraft, which lead to hundreds of healers being burnt at the stake because of forced ignorance and a hatred for strong women! So let's take back today and make it the spiritual day it once was. Your power to manifest today will be hightened as 13 represents rebirth, creation, alignment, transformation and growth.
Some people will avoid doing anything on Friday 13th due to superstition. Some people carry on as normal. I have a little ritual that involves choosing one or more films from the Friday 13th film series (including Jason vs Freddie) to watch every Friday 13th.
How you go about today is up to you but if you see a big guy in a white hockey mask near a lake, run! 😉
Blessings,
