Emporiblog - Salt Magic
Hello all!! Today's post is about Salt Magic!!
As you know, Salt has been used for centuries for a variety of things both magical and none so, let's take a look at Salt and what it means to those on the path.
A brief history
Before factories existed, the process of harvesting Salt was very time consuming and consisted of a lot of physical labor (Salt mines still exist) so, naturally, only the rich could afford Salt. The Roman army was paid in Salt as it was important for food preservation and was worth a lot more than it is today. Salt was also prized be the:
- Ancient Egyptians
- Hittites
- Ancient Greeks
- Byzantines
- Ancient Hebrews
- Ancient Chinese
Some of the earliest evidence of Salt processing dates back to 6000BC. People living in what is now present day Romania boiled spring water to extract Salt and Salt works in China date back to approximately the same time.
Magical Uses
In Buddhism and Shintoism, Salt is believed to repel evil and has purifying properties. Salt is also used for protection, it can also be used in, altar representation, Spell/Witch bottles, offerings to deities and house cleansing/cleansing in general. Salt is also associated financial abundance as it was once used to pay wages.
Circles made from Salt play a huge role in Rituals and Spell casting. It is also said that a demon or malevolent forces cannot cross a doorway marked with a Salt line or escape from a Salt circle.
Different kinds of Salt
Of course, different kinds of Salt have different properties. Let's have a look-see...
- Sea Salt. Sea Salt is sacred to deities connected to Water and is a key ingredient in Ocean/Sea Witchery. Sea Salt is also a mineral of Earth.

- Black Salt. Black Salt is NOT normal Salt that's been dyed black with colourants. Black Salt can be made with one of 3 ways. You can either mix your Salt with scrapings from a cauldron or a skillet or combine Salt with the ashes from a sacred Fire or from the ashes of herbs and incense or combine with charcoal and/or with the previous methods.
- White Salt. White Salt is the salt equivalent of Clear Quartz or White Candles. It comes in table, coarse and Kosher forms and can most likely be purchased at your local shop.
- Himalayan Salt. Himalayan or Pink Salt has been call the purest Salt on Earth and is mainly used in cooking. Himalayan Salt lamps or candle holders are said to boost energies. It is als a powerful warding ingredient.
- Blue Salt. Blue Salt is made by combining Salt and blue flowers/herbs with a mortar and pestle. It's used for healing, justice and protection from the Evil Eye.
- Green Salt. Green Salt is made by mixing Salt with herbs such as mint and rosemary and is used for luck and abundance.
These are the Salts that I could find information for. If there are any more, let me know!! I'll do a separate how-to post to help make your own Salts for cooking and Rituals.
