Emporiblog - Threshold Magic

Hello all!! Today's post is about Threshold Magic!

I came across this particular type of magic whilst researching for our Protection Powder post and it interested me so I made a note to explore it in a more in-depth post.

Thresholds are portals to other worlds or places or have a meaning of significance. The Ancient Romans where particularly fond of them and associated the God Janus with doorways and archways. In Ancient Rome, there were many freestanding structures used for symbolic entrances and exits with particular superstition attached to the departure of the Roman army for there were certain ways to march through a gateway some lucky, some unlucky.

There have even been some cases of magic practitioners saying that their energies and power are affected if they enter someone's home uninvited.

Throughout the years, there have been many creatures that need certain conditions or permission to cross a threshold, the one that comes to mind is Vampires. Vampires can only enter an occupied dwelling with the permission of the homeowner or someone who lives there. Demons are also affected by this rule with some being unable to enter a premises that has a salt line across the threshold. This is because salt has purifying properties.

However there are ways to revoke permissions previously given and to protect your threshold from further uninvited guests and energies.

Ways to protect your threshold

Your threshold is the portal to your home where people and energies enter so it's important for you to protect against unwanted intrusions. Here are some ways to protect your threshold:

- Protection Powder. You can make your own or buy pre-made powders like this one 👉🏻 Protection Powder. These work by sprinkling the powder across your threshold (doorways and/or windowsills) or use them in a ritual.

- Salt. As mentioned above, salt has purifying properties and has been used for centuries. Any salt placed across a threshold will suffice even table salt!!

- Cascarilla Powder. Thus is a powder from American folklore made from dried and ground eggshells. With natural protective properties, it has been used by Hoodoo practitioners and Conjurers for centuries. You can get the same result with dried and ground Crab Shell.

- Protection Spells. There is an abundance of protection spells out there and you can also make your own. If the spell requires you to make a mixture, dip your fingers in the mixture and trace the outside your doorframe and windowsills but only if it is safe to do so!! Make sure you follow the/your spell accurately.

- Cleansing. Check out our list of ways to cleanse here 👉🏻House Cleansing

- Plants. Some plants have protective properties. You can either place cuttings of these plants on your doorway/windowsill, have actual plants near your doorway or have plants along a pathway leading to your door. Hanging baskets or plant pots placed either side or a doorway or windowsill with protective flowers should protect them. If you have pets, make sure any plants you use are safe to use around your animals. These include:

. Honeysuckle. When placed above a doorway during Walpurgis it will lend protection.

. St John's Wart. If placed above a doorway during the summer solstice, it will both protect your household and help clear your home of negative and hurtful energies.

. Rowan. This tree is connected to the Norse God Thor and offers powerful protective properties, it can also deflect evils and malevolence from your threshold, preventing them from entering your home. It's best to plant a Rowan tree on the pathway leading to your door but if you can't plant one, tie a small bundle of its twigs together with something red and place them by your door. The same goes for Oak, you can also use acorns in place of twigs for this.

. Birch Sticks. Placing Birch sticks by your door or above it will block negative energies from entering your home and help manifest positive ones.

- Warding and Sigils. I will have to cover this in more detail. Until then, it's best to do your own reading and research.

It's completely up to you how often you update your protections and when you do this. If I have missed a method or you have one of your own you'd like to share, let us know in the comments!!

I hope you've enjoyed today's post, keep your eyes open for tomorrow's Tarot Tuesday!!

Blessings,
