Flora Friday - Butterfly Bush

Hello all! Today's Flora Friday is Butterfly Bush!

Butterfly Bush belongs to the Scorphulariaceae family and it's Latin name is Buddleja Davidii. Other names include:

- Orange Eye
- Summer Lilac
- Buddleia
- Violet Butterfly Bush
- Letnji Jorgovan

I also call them Purple Cone Things.

Where to find

Butterfly Bush is native to the Sichuan andand Hubei Provences of China and is also native to Japan. It is classified as an invasive species in the UK, Republic of Ireland and New Zealand; it has become a naturalised species in Australia. It grows easily on open lands and in gardens as it is also an ornamental plant. As it is classified as an invasive plant in some areas, check with your local conversation laws on where/if you can grow it and consult local experts.

Edible Parts

I've found a few references to a sticky rice dish made in China that uses the flowers to dye the rice a yellow colour but I can't find any specifics also a few references to the flowers being boiled and the water being consumed afterwards.I have found a few medical uses so I assume that the plant can be consumed in some way, more on this below 👇🏻

Medicinal Uses

Butterfly Bush has a history in Chinese and Korean medicine, with its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties it has been used to help treat:

- Inflammation
- Wounds
- Light sensitivity
- Swollen eyes
- Eye problems in general
- Headaches
- Inflammatory conditions

This is done by placing a dressing or a compress on the affected area that has been soaked in the leaves of the plant.

For eye problemsproblems, it's been recommended to boil the flowers and drink the water as stated above.

Do not substitute Butterfly Bush for ongoing treatment.

Magical Uses

Butterfly Bush symbolises:

- New beginnings
- Strength
- Unlikely Opportunities
- Creativity
- Freedom

It has also been linked to summoning Fae. I would also use this in garden and wildlife rituals/spells or if you feel a connection to butterflies, hummingbirds and bees. Butterfly Bush should also make a nice offering for deities linked to nature.

Victorian Flower Language

I couldn't find anything relating to Butterfly Bush and Victorian Flower Language.
