Tarot Tuesday - The Fool
Hello all!! We're kicking off our Major Arcana series with The Fool!
The Fool sits at the beginning of the Major Arcana at 0 or in some cases 22 or it remains unnumbered. Let's have a look at the history of The Fool and what The Fool represents. It's associated with the element of Air and the Planet Uranus.
History
In early Decks, The Fool was called Le Mat in French and Il Matto in Italian, meaning The Madman and The Begger respectively. These archaic words conjure up completely different imagery to the one we're used to, thanks to the Rider-Waite Deck, which was originally published in 1910. Early art depicts The Fool as a beggar or a lowly court jester. These interpretations, particularly the ones leaning towards the Begger imagery, show the uncertainty and trepidation that comes with a new journey and it's new beginning.

The purpose of this segment is to help you with your own interpretations.
In the card pictured above, we can see The Fool sitting up front dressed like a court jester in vivid colours. He is sat cross-legged on the floor, holding a staff and a thorny, blue rose. In the background, we can see what is presumably the Royal Court however, they look like ghosts and refuse to face The Fool. The only thing to stand out in the background is a golden crown on who is presumably the Queen. In the bottom left corner, there's a frog with a necklace in its mouth and in the right corner, a mirror reflects the underside of The Fool's jaw. (Believe me, it's definitely a mirror, I searched online for hours for the full artwork!!).
It's important to study your cards closely and see what you can see. If you have multiple Decks, you can compare the variations in interpretation
Meaning
The Fool represents new beginnings and starting over, either with nothing or trying something again. You've either taken a leap of faith or it's a sign that you should do so. You may not know what to expect but beginner's luck is with you. Have faith in the future and the universe will deliver; your spontaneity will be rewarded.
Reversed Meaning
Now is not the time to start over and doing so with naivety and lack of direction will only bring chaos. Do not rush into things. You must plan accordingly and make sure that you've gone through everything thoroughly, a spontaneous decision could ruin everything.
Everyone has their own interpretation of Tarot. Interpretations differ from person to person.
I hope you've enjoyed this post! I intended for this series to be beginner friendly and aim to carry that on throughout the series, eventually covering all 78 cards!
Blessings,
