Emporiblog - The Importance of Notes

Hello all!! Today's post is about the importance of note taking!!

The written word has provided us with insight into long gone civilisations for as long as we've been able to decipher them. Whether it was carved into a stone tablet, a wall or written on paper, valuable information has somehow managed to withstand the test of time to make its way to us. If you come from a line of practicing path followers, chances are that you have a Grimoire or a Book of Shadows or an assortment of notes that have been passed down through the generations.

Remember that recipe book full of alterations and extra recipes that lived somewhere in the kitchen? That's one too.

Sadly, the written word can also be destroyed, normally due to fear and ignorance. This is why a lot of the 'old ways' have been forgotten by younger generations by no fault of their own I might add.

That is why documenting your practice is so important. Not just for future generations but for future reference as well. With the advancements in technology, you can store your notes on multiple devices and scan existing ones as well to help preserve them.

Things to document

Here's a few ideas on what to document on your journey:

- Dreams. If you're lucky enough to remember your dreams, it might be a good idea to write them down. Most dreams or at least some aspects of dreams have specific meanings (more on Dreamwork at a later date), some dreams are even prophetic, meaning that events in the dream will occur at some point in the future.

- Tarot. How you interpret your cards is up to you. If you're a beginner, I'd suggest studying your cards first and writing down what you can see and how it links in with the interpretation. Later on, you can see how far you've come.

- Spells/Rituals. When you create a Spell, it's important to know exactly how to cast it again if it is successful or to go over it again if for some reason it doesn't work. The same goes for Rituals. If for some reason it's not working at all or it's not working like it did before, go over your notes!

- How you feel during events. This can be during a part of the lunar cycle, a retrograde or a solstice. You may feel something during one event but feel totally different during the next one. Documenting how you feel can help you better understand yourself and how the universe effects you.

- Recipes. A recipe can be for food, incense or a Spell/Ritual. Recipes can always be tweaked at a later date if you find you need to add something or take something away.

- Altar layouts. If you change your Altar with the seasons or have specific ones during certain times, it's probably best to keep notes on what goes where and what goes with which set up. It's also good to keep track of offerings, especially if there's liquids and food involved!

- Day to day. Some people like to keep a daily journal to document their daily lives. This could help with remembering important life events or serve as a lesson for the future.

- Interactions with nature. If nature is a key part of your path then it's a good idea to document how plants and animals make you feel. By doing this, you can sharpen your intuition around flora and fauna. Obviously do not interact with dangerous flora and fauna!

If, like me, your memory isn't what it used to be, notes about anything and everything will be a lifesaver if, also like me, you can remember where you put them 😉

We have a few note books available on the website if you need another one!

Blessings,
