Emporiblog - The Importance of Research

Hello all!! Today's post is all about the importance of research into your respective path!!

You shouldn't rush into Witchcraft. Especially after seeing a few memes and Tiktok videos. Whilst Tiktok does have some useful information, it's always best to double check, especially if you're just starting out or have never heard of/performed what was being shown. Let's have a look at what tools research to keep yourself and your practice as safe as possible....

Herbs/Flora

This is an important one. As well as knowing the magical purposes of the herbs/flora you intend to use, you also need to know the following:

- How to handle

- Alternate names

- Where to find

- Toxicity to humans/animals

- Safe consumption methods

- If you're ordering, is it ethically sourced/safe to import?

- Do they belong to a closed practice?

- Are they safe to combine with other herbs/flora?

- Is anyone in your household allergic?

Once you're sure of the about, you can continue with your practice.

Closed Practice

A Closed Practice is a Practice that is only available to people of:

- Specific ancestry

- Specific counties

- Specific ethnicities

Or people who have been initiated into a specific practice.

If none of the above applies to you then you CANNOT practice that path. This also applies to certain ingredients, tools and rituals. It's always best to double check to make sure that you're not appropriating another practice.

Crystals

Like herbs, as well as knowing the magical properties of a Crystal, you need to know the following:

- Is it as ethically sourced as possible?

- Can it be left in sunlight?

- Is it water safe?

- Can it be cleansed in salt?

- Is it fake?

Also, if you have a crystal ball, COVER IT UP IF YOU'RE NOT USING IT!! If the Sun hits it at the wrong angle, it'll start a fire!

Essential Oils/Incense

Most of the questions from the Herbs/Flora apply to this section. Please do your research and be weary of pets and people with respiratory problems. Never leave an incense/oil burner unattended!

Candles

There's the obvious candle safety, never leave one unattended, make sure your holder is safe to use or on a heatproof surface and keep water handy just in case.

If you're making your own or augmenting a candle by putting herbs, spices, fragrances and crystals into it, you need to make sure that you're not overloading your candle as it could explode!

If you're just starting out, read as many books as possible and as many credible sources as possible!

Intuition is great but you need to know what you're doing, Witchcraft isn't a toy and needs to be respected.
