Hello all!! Today's Flora Friday is the Red Campion!!
Red Campion (Silene Dioica) is a herbaceous flowering plant of the Caryophillaceae family. Red Campion is also an Ancient Forest indicator meaning that it may be possible to tell the age of a wood from its presence. Other names include:
- Red Catchfly
- Red Cockle
- Pink Campion
- RΓΈd Jonsokblom
- RΓΆdblΓ€ra
- Robin Hood
- Adder's Flower
- Morning Campion
- Red Night Elke
- Red Forest Elke
- Taglicht Elke
Where to find
Red Campion is native to central, western and northern Europe and known throughout southern Europe. It has been introduced in Argentina, Canada, Iceland and the US. Red Champion can be found in woodlands, hedgerows, ditches and roadside verges.
Edible Parts
Apparently this plant is NOT edible. It contains Saponins, which are toxic in large quantities, but, if you accidentally consume a small amount, it should pass through your system without issue unless you are allergic.
Medicinal Uses
I can find no medical uses for Red Campion. I did find a very vague reference to treating snakebites but I'd talk to a doctor and local experts first if you're going anywhere with snakes.
Magical Uses
In Folklore, Red Campions are said to protect fairies from discovery and protect the honey stores of bees so, I would use them in Fae work and deities associated with bees and Spells for cloaking yourself from those who wish you harm.
Victorian Flower Language
In Victorian Flower Language, Red Campion symbolises gentleness.
In conclusion, whilst this plant may not have many uses, it is a great source of food for bees and other insects and would look nice in a garden and in its natural habitat.
