Emporiblog - Apple Magic
Hello all!! Today's post is about Apple Magic!
Thanks to films like the original Disney Snow White, Apples go hand in hand with poison and jealous Queens that are secretly evil Witches in disguise. Whilst I'm sure that there are baneful uses for Apples, we'll be focusing on the lighter side for this post!
A little Apple story
From what I can remember, which, to be honest, isn't much, a Spell involving an Apple was my first encounter with proper, real life Magic. I can't remember if I'd come home from school or was just playing in the garden as I was very young at the time but I found an Apple in the grass, by the little rose bush and it had red wool tied around it. I asked my mum about it and she told me that it was supposed to be there. Of course, now I know better.
A brief look at Apple Mythology
As Apples have been around a very long time, it stands to reason that they've accumulated a few myths and legends along the way!
- The most obvious one is the one from the Bible. Eve picked and ate a forbidden Apple from the tree of knowledge, causing herself and Adam to be banished from the garden of Eden and creating the original sin.
- Apples are associated with the Goddess Idunn in Norse mythology. She would feed Apples to the others in the Norse pantheon to help them maintain their Immortality. At some point, Loki (surprise surprise) managed to trick Idunn into handing over her special Apples which in turn caused the other Deities to slowly lose their power, which was only restored when Loki eventually returned said Apples.
- In Ancient Greece, Apples were said to be responsible for most of the Trojan war. Eris, the chaos Goddess, was the only one in the Greek pantheon that wasn't invited to a banquet (anyone else getting Maleficent vibes?) so, she crashed said banquet and bring a golden Apple with her. The Apple would be given to one judged the fairest by Paris, the Princ if Troy, out of Athena, Hera and Aphrodite. Paris picked Aphrodite who then offered him Helen of Sparta as a thank-you. Hera was NOT happy and did everything she could to ensure Troy's destruction in the ensuing war.
- In the Arthurian legends, Avalon means the Island of Apples and is the place where Excalibur was forged. It is also the place that Arthur went to when he was mortally wounded by Mordred, his not so legitimate son.
Apple Associations
Apart from the obvious (thanks Disney!), Apples have some more positive associations, including:
- Luck
- Divination
- Prosperity
- Immortality/Longevity
- Love
- Acquiring hidden knowledge
- Opening gateways
- The Element of Water
- The Planet Venus
- Creativity
- Fertility
- Abundance
- Mabon
- Harvest rituals
- The Underworld/Otherworld
There are also several Deities associated with Apples themselves or that will accept Apples as offerings but it's best to do your own research into a specific Deity if you're working with them.
Magicks you can do with Apples
Below are some of the ways that you can use Apples in Magic:
- Peel the Apple as best you can, trying to keep the peel in one long piece. Once you've finished peeling, drop the peel on the floor. It should form a letter or something that looks like one. That letter if the first initial of your true love.
- Apples play a huge role in Mabon rituals. If you're looking something up for Mabon, chances are there's an Apple or 2 involved!
- Use the bark of an Apple tree to make runes and branches/twigs to make wands, staffs and besoms/brooms.
- Cut an Apple in half but not from top to bottom. This should reveal a pentagram! You can then dry these pentagram slices so they last longer.
- Apples also have their place in Hoodoo practices but as Hoodoo is a closed practice that I am not part of so I will not list them.
- Apples are great to use in Simmer Pots as they have a lot of associations. A Simmer Pot is where you get the biggest pan you can (depending on how many ingredients you want to use), put as much water into it as you feel you need to, then add your chosen ingredients for your chosen purpose and bring the water to a gentle simmer whilst stirring/saying your intentions. This will help fill your home with your intentions. Depending on the ingredients used, you can drink the water, either cold or as a tea or an ingredient. You can also use it for Spell/ritual work.
I think we'll end this here as there is a lot of information to take in! I don't think it matters what colour the Apple is unless it's a Deity offering!
I hope you've enjoyed this post! If there's anything I've missed, let me know!
Blessings,
