Tarot Tuesday - The Hierophant
Hello all!! We carry on through the Major Arcana with The Hierophant!!
The Hierophant sits at number 5 in the Major Arcana. It is associated with the element of Earth and the planet Venus.
History
The word Hierophant comes from the Ancient Greek word Hierophantฤs which means "displayer of holy things. A Hierophantฤs was thought to be the chief priest of the Eleusinian mysteries (an Ancient Greek ritual.) In the Tarot de Marseilles, The Hierophant was known as The Pope.

The purpose of this segment is to help you with your own interpretations.
In the card pictured above we can see a cloaked skeleton holding a glowing rose with bracelets on one hand. There also appears to be a Gorgon broach on his cloak. The skeleton is sat at a desk with an open book and a few loose pieces of paper. There's a black feather and a tiny sword and pin inbedded in the desk. O. The shelves behind, I can see various books with symbols on the spines and various containers and untencils. Outside, a storm appears to be raging into the night. His chair is marked with a pentagram and features 2 dragon motifs.
Meaning
The Hierophant is a card of tradition. In this sense, tradition is a good thing and should be followed as best as you can. However, The Hierophant also promotes learning and education, either to do with tradition or your own path. At this time, someone with insight into the knowledge that you seek will come to aid you in your learning. If you are drawn to a religious or spiritual path, The Hierophant is telling you to embrace that path. If you have previously been part of a path but have simply neglected it, go back to it. It is possible that a marriage may occur, either one of tradition or of choice
Reversed Meaning
A reversed Hierophant means that you have rejected the traditions and values of your family. This rejection has lead to a breakdown between yourself and those around you, particularly family members. Don't continue to turn your back on these traditions unless it is absolutely necessary. During this time, councils that have been given to you have been poor which has only exacerbated matters. If you are in a position of power of some sort, you have been abusing that power whether you knew it or not.
Everyone has their own interpretation of Tarot. Interpretations differ from person to person.
I hope you've enjoyed this post!! We'll continue with The Lovers next week!
