Tarot Tuesday - The Lovers
The Lovers are number 6 in the Major Arcana. They are associated with the element of Air and the planet Mercury.
History
In some Decks, The Lovers where referred to as The Twins which is a nod to Gemini, which is The Lovers associated sign. In historical Decks, there is reference to The Lovers specifically referencing the plight of Paris of Troy when he had to choose between Helen of Troy and Aphrodite.

In the card pictured above, we can see a male like dragon/demon figure interlocking with a semi-nude female figure with angel wings. They are quite close to each other with deep meaningful looks in their eyes. The demon/dragon has his tongue outstretched towards the woman's neck. A black ribbon is wrapping itself around the two of them. There appears to be some sort of symbol dangling from another ribbon attached to the female. We can also see the words "Blood Bound" and what appears to be blood splatters dotted about the picture.
Meaning
The Lovers isn't just about relationships. They also represent being at a crossroads and choices. The choices themselves could be linked to the crossroads or completely separate. You shouldn't rush into a decision. You need to have a clear head and understanding before you can make your choice. Carefully and meticulously go through all of your options so you can pick the best one (consult the other cards in the reading or do a separate one if still unsure). Of course, there is a relationship side to The Lovers. They symbolise commitment, falling in love and partnerships (both romantic and not). If your reading was about love then an upright Lovers card symbolises that all is either well or everything will fall into place soon.
Reversed Meaning
Reversed Lovers are not happy Lovers. They symbolise infidelity within within a relationship, either one of you has been unfaithful or is on the verge of it. Due to this infidelity, a separation will likely come about. A separation isn't only related to romantic relationships. It can symbolises a separation of family ties or a friendship dissolving. If your reading is about a specific relationship, reversed Lovers mean that that relationship is now broken. It can also mean that you have issues within a relationship or issues forming and keeping said relationships. Either way, if a relationship is starting to wane or the energies become negative, you need to nip it in the bud and take a look at what's going on and what is causing the friction. If you catch it early enough, you may be able to salvage the relationship.
