Emporiblog - Altar Items - Incense

Why do people use/put Incense on their Altar?
There are several answers to this, including:
- Element Representation. Incense can be used to physically represent the elements of both Air and Fire. The smoke represents Air and the burning incense itself represents Fire. Or if you're using essential oils and a diffuser, the scent is Air and the Candle is Fire
- Deity Offering. Depending on the Deity, Incense could be used as an offering if they have deemed it to be acceptable. They may tell you what scent to use or you might have to research what is appropriate
- Cleansing. Incense smoke from a cleansing Incense can be used to cleanse as can some essential oils
- Ritual/Spell Work. Incense and essential oils can be used as ingredients
Which is better: Sticks, Cones, Loose or Essential Oils?
Honestly, it doesn't matter, it's up to the individual, what they can afford and have access to.
If you're asking this in regards to a Deity, try all of them and see what they like! You can have some fun making your own!
Do I have to use Incense?
No. Not everyone can afford or use Incense.
What can I do if I can't use Incense?
If you can't use Incense/Oils, you can:
- Burn Herbs. Most herbs/flowers have a corresponding Incense
- Sprays. If you can't burn anything or use Oils, then Sprays are a good alternative. They can be homemade or bought online
- Scent Bags. Another alternative to burning is a Scent Bag. You can fill these with a mixture of herbs, flowers, Oils and Incense blends and place them around your home. These can also be handmade or bought online
USE RESPONSIBLY! NEVER LEAVE ANYTHING BURNING UNATTENDED! USE IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA!
