Flora Friday - Oak

Hello all!! Today's Flora Friday is Oak, which is our first featured tree!!

Oak (Quercus) are a tree or a shrub that are also a genus of the Fagaceae family, also known as the Beech family. I have determined that the Oak pictured above is Common Oak (Quercus Lobur). Other names include:

- Pedunculate Oak
- English Oak
- بلوط (Baluwt) (Arabic)
- European Oak
- French Oak
- Acorn Tree
- Truffle Oak
- Carvalho-alvarinho
- Carvalho-robel
- Zomereik
- Stieleiche
- Sommereiche
- Deutsche Eiche
- Roure Pnol

The Oak is also the National Symbol of Latvia and 2, fruited, crossed Oak branches feature on the Bulgarian coat of arms.

Where To Find

Common Oak is a native species to most of Europe and is widely grown in temperate regions. It can also be found in parts of China, North America and Australia. Common Oaks can be found in forests, woodlands and parks and in gardens (usually larger/estates).

Edible Parts

I have found that most Acorns are edibleedible but only after a lengthy leeching process has been completed to remove tannin.

Medicinal Uses

Apparently, Common Oak has been used in the past to treat:

- Dysentery
- Chest infections
- Diarrhoea
- Sweaty feet
- Sore throats
- Haemorrhoids
- Internal bleeding
- Bleeding gums

It is important to note that Gastric Distress can occur if the tannin hasn't been properly removed and it may also affect how other medications are absorbed by the body.

Magical Uses

In magical practices, Oak (in general) is use for:

- Purification
- Protection
- Prosperity
- Warding off negativity
- Money
- Abundance
- Strength
- Health
- Healing
- Fertility
- Wisdom
- Youth
- Power
- Balance

Victorian Flower Language

In Victorian Flower Language, Oak means bravery. If you receive Oak with Sweet Williams and Monkshood, it means someone admires you and if paired with Clematis, bits means that someone sees you as a leader figure in their lives and they appreciate you.
