Flora Friday - Olive

Hello all!! Today's Flora Friday is.... Olive!

The Olive Tree (Olea) is a tree species that is part of the Oleaceae family. I have determined that the Olive pictured above is a European Olive (Olea Europaea). Other names include:

- Olive
- Oliveleaf
- Small-fruit Olive
- Olive Tree (Cultivated)
- Wild Olive Tree (Wild)
- Masinu
- Olivebaum
- Alzaitu
- African Olive
- Common Olive
- True Olive
- زیتون (Persian for Olives)

Where To Find

European Olive is traditionally found in the Mediterranean Basin and is cultivated throughout the Mediterranean. It can also be found in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and North and South America. These trees like woods but can also surviveein dry rocky places.

Edible Parts

The fruit of the Olive Tree (coincidentally also called an Olive) can be eaten, preferably without the pit. Olive oil also comes from this plant (surprise surprise) which can be used for a number of things in the culinary world. I have found a few mentions of the leaves being edible but nothing concrete.

Medicinal Uses

In various forms over the years, the European Olive Tree has been used to help:

- Reduce blood sugar
- Cholesterol
- Uric acid
- Diabetes (CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR)
- Hypertension
- Inflammation
- Diarrhoea
- Respiratory infections
- UTIs
- Stomach problems
- Intestinal upsets
- Asthma
- Rheumatism
- Haemorrhoids

It can also be used as a mouth cleanser and laxative.

Magical Uses

The Olive Tree is sacred to the Goddess Athena and was also sacred to the city of Athens to the point where is appeared on the Athenian coin and was used to fuel sacred temple lamps. It can also be used for:

- Protection
- Luck
- Preventing Evil from entering your home (if hung over the door)
- Asperging (a form of cleansing)
- Promoting a peaceful household
- Ending arguments
- Fertility (wreath for females and eating olives for males)

Olive oil is also a great base for oil blends/anointing oils but the smell will be noticeable. It is also said that if you write Athena's name on an Olive leaf and press it to your forehead, it will relieve a headache.

Victorian Flower Language

In Victorian Flower Language, Olive Trees/branches mean peace. If sent with Hawthorne and Rue, it's means that someone is asking for forgiveness. It can also be sent with Queen Anne's Lace as a gift for a housewarming.
