Flora Friday - Petunia
Hello all!! Today's Flora Friday is Petunia!
Petunia (Petunia) are a genus of over 20 species of flowering plants in the Solanaceae family. Most garden variety Petunias, like the one pictured above, are hybrids (Petunia X Hybrida or Petunia X Atkinsiana). I couldn't find any alternative names for Petunia, so, if you have any, please let me know!
Where to find
Petunias are native to South America and like areas with lots of sunlight and moist, well draining soil.
Edible Parts
I have found conflicting sources on this topic. Some say that Petunia are edible but it should be noted that Petunia are part of the Nightshade
family, so advise caution and consult with local experts first!
Medicinal Uses
I can't find any specifics on Petunias and possible medical uses.
Magical Uses
In magical practices, Petunia are used for:
- Protection
- Achieving goals
- Hope
- Balance
To the Mayan and Inca peoples, Petunias are believed to be able to ward off monsters from the underworld and spirits with their smell. In Folklore, it is said that Petunias will only grow where there is positive energy.
Victorian Flower Language
In Victorian Flower Language, Petunia mean anger and resentment. If you send Petunia with Rosemary, it means that you will never forgive the person for their wrongdoings and if paired with Wormwood, it means displeasure at an outcome.
