Flora Friday - Holly

Hello all! This week's Flora Friday is Holly!

Holly (Ilex) is a genus of plant that has over 500 species belonging to the Aquifoliaceae family. I have determined that the Holly pictured above is English Holly (Ilex Aquifolium), other names include:

- Holly
- Common Holly
- European Holly
- Holly Tree
- Holly-green
- Holm
- Christmas Holly

Where To Find

Holly trees, in general, tend to grow in 3 types of climates: tropical, subtropical and temperate. The greatest diversities of the Holly genus can be found in the Americas and Southeast Asia. They tend to like woodland areas and hedgerows

Edible Parts

The leaves can be consumed, preferably dried and in a tea. However, the Holly berries are TOXIC, especially in large quantities and to children and some animals.

Medicinal Uses

Over the years, Holly has been used to help:

- Fevers
- Rheumatism
- Digestive issues
- Hypertension
- Circulation issues
- Coughs
- Headaches
- Toothaches
- Swelling

Holly also contains caffeine so, if like me, you have an allergy, sensitivity or intolerance, avoid consuming Holly.

The berries will cause vomiting and diarrhoea.

Magical Uses

In magical practices, Holly is used for:

- Material gain
- Exacting physical revenge (more on this at a later date)
- Beauty/glamour magic
- Luck
- Dream magic
- Protection
- Banishing

Victorian Flower Language

In Victorian Flower Language, Holly means foresight
