Flora Friday - Silver Poplar
Hello all! Today's Flora Friday is the Silver Poplar!
The Silver Poplar (Populus Alba) is a species of tree in the Populus genus that is part of the Salicaceae family that is also related to Aspens. Other names include:
- Silverleaf Poplar
- White Poplar
- Abele
- European White Poplar
- Silver-leaved Poplar
- Abele Tree
- Gin-doro
- Xin Bai Yang
The Silver Poplar pictured is only a baby and you can already see the white branches but what you can't see in the picture is that the underside of the leaves is also white!
Where To Find
Silver Poplar is native to Morocco, Central Europe and Central Asia. It likes moist areas, like watersides, and preferes countries with hot summers that then turn to cold/mild winters. They also make good windbreaks on coastal areas
Edible Parts
I cannot find any culinary uses for this plant but it does have medicinal uses so it can be consumed, if administered properly.
Medicinal Uses
It is mainly the bark of the plant that has been used for medicinal purposes. The bark can be taken internally and used as a poultice to help:
- Rheumatism
- Lower back problems
- Digestive issues
- Gout
- Chilblains
- Haemorrhoids
- Treat infected wounds
The bark is an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and an astringent.
Magical Uses
In magical practices, Silver Poplar is used for:
- Life and Death duality
- Representing the Underworld
- Representing Pluto
- Remembering the dead
- Resurrection
They are also associated with Heracles who is said to have worn a crown of White Poplar to celebrate returning from the Underworld.
