Tarot Tuesday - Death

Hello all! Today's Tarot Tuesday is Death!

Death is number 13 (unlucky for some) in the Major Arcana and is associated with the element of Water and the planet Pluto.

History

In some early Decks, like the Tarot de Marseilles and the Visconti Deck, they do not specially call this card Death, instead refering to it as "The card with no name". In other Decks it is called either Rebirth or Death-Rebirth. Normal Death depictions normally include a Grim Reaper and/or a pale horse (in the Bible, it states that Death rides a pale horse).

The purpose of this section is to help you with your own interpretations.

In the card pictured above, we can see a winged Grim Reaper with a cloak and a huge scythe. The Grim Reaper appears to be leaning over a pile of skeletons and bones with an evil expression on his "face". There is a sword inbedded in a ribcage that looks like it once belonged to someone of high standing. The whole artwork has a crimson overlay

Meaning

An upright Death has both positive and negative connotations. The main meaning of Death is endings. Depending on your question, it could signify the end of you question e.g the end of a relationship, the end of a job, the end of the current period in your life, you get the idea. It is important that you do not stop these endings and they will bring about profound changes. How you interpret them depends on you and the other cards in your reading. It also signifies that you need to let go of attachments as said attachments are holding you back. The more negative aspects include an impending failure or fear of failure, the stress of which may or may not be linked to an illness, either ongoing or upcoming. This illness however, will make you more aware of your mortality and may be the wake up call you need.

Reversed Meaning

This not a card you want to be reversed. It is very unforgiving and does not mince it's words. It shows that you are either delaying natural endings either through a resistance to change or your own stubbornness. This resistance to change can apply to other aspects of your life as well. You need to figure out why you're resisting certain changes and start to allow said changes. These delayed endings and resisting changes may lead to a period of depression which will only exacerbated your current situation. To overcome this, you need overcome your fears of change, either by yourself or with help. You are delaying changes that need to happen. It can also foreshadow a long illness but not Death itself, you will be impacted by this illness but you will overcome it. There is a silver lining of naΓ―vety here are that is could simply be completely unaware of what is happening and why it's happening. If this is the case, consult the other cards in the reading or have a more in-depth reading to find out how to overcome this.

Everyone has their own interpretation of Tarot. Interpretations differ from person to person.

I hope you've enjoyed this post! Next week will either be Major Arcana or a Spread, I haven't quite decided yet!

Blessings,
