Imbolc
Hello all!! Today we are doing our Imbolc post as my omnipresent brain fog worked out a Sigil timetable and then I decided to look at the calendar.... And this is the only day I can do this post so, let's get into Imbolc!!
Imbolc is one of 4 traditional Gaelic festivals. There is also a Christian aspect to Imbolc as it is also known as St Brigid's Day as it marks the day of St Brigid's feast day. This was possibly to christianise the celebration to a Saint rather than to the Goddess Brigid. Imbolc is traditionally held on the 1st of February as it is just about halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Imbolc has traditionally been celebrated and observed in Ireland, Scotland and The Isle of Man so there are some alternative names for Imbolc/St Brigid's Day as follows:
- Imbolg (Irish)
- Lá Fhéile Bríde (Irish)
- Là Fhèill Brìghde (Scottish Gaelic)
- Laa'l Breeshey (Manx)
Saint Brigid also has variations:
- Brigit (Old Irish)
- Bríd (Modern Irish)
- Brìghde or Brìd (Modern Scottish Gaelic)
- Bridget (Anglicised)
