Flora Friday - Geranium

Hello all!! Today's Flora Friday is Geranium!!

Geraniums (Geranium) are a  of over 400 different flowering species of the Geraniaceae family. I had some trouble identifying this plant as they are often confused with Pelargoniums. Pelargoniums used to be classed as a Geranium species but it was separated in the late 1700s into a different species, although, it does still carry the botanical name of Geranium. So, to make this easier on myself so I don't go insane over a flower, I'm going to call it a Geranium and leave it at that. Other names include:

- Cranesbill
- Pelargoniums
- Crane's-bill

The name Geranium and the English name of Crane's-bill come from the Greek words γέρανος (géranos) and γερανός (geranós), which both mean crane.

Where To Find

Geraniums can be found throughout temperate regions and tropical mountain ranges however, the Eastern part of the Mediterranean region is where most of them are found. They are also commonly found in gardens and parks.

Edible Parts

Apparently, the leaves and flowers of scented Geraniums are edible, but, I would NOT consume any Geranium unless you have consulted an expert.

Medicinal Uses

Geraniums can help with:

- Eczema/Skin problems
- Healing bruises
- Cuts and Scrapes
- Sunburn
- Nail fungus
- Varicose veins
- Insomnia
- Lowering stress
- Reducing inflammation
- Kidney health
- Strengthening the immune system

Geraniums are an antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, insect repellent and a tick repellent.

Again, DO NOT CONSUME UNLESS PRESCRIBED BY AN EXPERT

Magical Uses

In magical practices, Geraniums are used for:

- Overcoming negativity
- Protection
- Happiness
- Balancing the mind and body
- Love
- Acceptance
- Prosperity
- Release anger/anxiety
- Overcoming depression
- Good health

- Astral travel

Victorian Flower Language
