Flora Friday - Rose

Hello all!! In honour of Valentine's Day on Monday, this week's Flora Friday is Rose!


Rose (Rosa) is an extensive genus of flowers and cultivators in the Rosaceae family. I have determined that the Rose pictured above is a Hungarian Rose (Rosa Gallica). Other names include:

- Apothecary Rose
- Officinal Rose
- Red Rose
- French Rose
- Red Rose of Lancaster
- Province Rose
- Cabbage Rose
- Gertrude Jekyll Rose





Where To Find

Roses as a whole are mostly native to Asia but there are some species that are native to Europe, North America and Northwestern Africa. Roses are commonly found in gardens and parks due to their scent and beauty and come in a variety of colours and sizes.





Edible Parts

Some parts are edible!! The leaves, buds, hips and petals are all edible, once they've been cleaned and prepared. Most varieties are edible but the sweeter smelling ones are said to be the most flavourful.





Medicinal Uses

The petals and hips are the main parts used in medicine, they can help with:

- Improving skin health
- Anxiety

- Menstrual Cramps
- Easing the menopause
- Fighting infections
