Flora Friday - Sunflower

Hello all!! Today's Flora Friday is the Sunflower!! (picture from readnational.com)


Sunflower (Helianthus) is a genus of around 70 species that, believe it or not, belong to the Daisy family Asteraceae. I have determined that the Sunflower pictured above is a Helianthus Annuus. Other names include:

- Common Sunflower
- Wild Sunflower
- Annual Sunflower
- Garden Sunflower
- Fuzzy Face Sunflower
- Turnesol
- Ocľiul a soarilui (Romanian - The Eye of the Sun)
- Sōlate (Haitian Creole)
- آفتابگردان (Persian)
- పొద్దు తిరుగుడు (సూర్యకాంతం) (Telugu - Sunflower/Sunlight)
- সূর্যমুখী (Bangla)
- سورج مکھی (Urdu)
- Girasol
- Napraforgó (Hungarian)
- соняшник (Ukrainian)


Now I did want to save the Sunflower for warmer weather but, I found out today that it is the National flower of the Ukraine and I feel like it needs to be posted now.




Where To Find

Sunflowers are native to North America and Central America with the exception of 3 species that are native to South America. Obviously, Sunflowers like warm weather and favour dry, summer weather. They can be grown in most places and are a good source of food (Sunflower seeds).




Edible Parts

The seeds are edible and an Oil can also be made from the seeds. The roots, leaves, sprouts and stalk are also edible and so are the petals (I would research each part thoroughly before consuming). Pure Sunflower tea is caffeine free!!

Sunflowers, in various forms, can help with:

- Strengthening bones
