The History of Valentine's Day
Hello all!! Today we're going to take a look at the history of Valentine's Day!!
Valentine's Day is Christian festival that celebrates the martyr of St Valentine or one or two of them. It's is a fixed festivalfestival that is celebrated on one of three dates, depending on which church you belong to:
- 14th February (Western orthodox church)
- 6th July (Eastern orthodox church)
- 30th July (Eastern orthodox church)
It is also known as:
- St Valentine's Day
- The Feast of St Valentine
Origins
Now here's where it gets complicated, there's more than one St Valentine! The main Valentine that is celebrated is St Valentine of Rome. This Valentine was imprisoned and persecuted be the Roman Empire in the 3rd Century AD. The legends around this Valentine have changed over the centuries with early editions stating that while imprisoned, he restored eyesight to a jailer's blind daughter. Later accounts add a "love" theme to this by saying that Valentine also wrote said daughter a love letter and sighed it Your Valentine. It wasn't until the late 5th Century AD that Pope Gelasius I established the Feast of St Valentine on the 14th of February as that was the date of this Valentines death.
The other main Valentine is Valentine of Terni (formally Interamna). This is why the Eastern orthodox church has 2 official Valentine's celebrations. The one on the 6th of July celebrates St Valentine of Rome and the celebration on the 30th of July celebrates St Valentine of Terni.
There is also a reference to a third Valentine who was martyred in Africa, according to early Martyrologies, but very little is known about this Valentine.
It was in the 14th and 15th Centuries that Valentine's Day became associated with love as courting and courtly love became popular notions and it has evolved since then.
Customs
The Valentine's Day as we know it now mostly revolves around romance and love with customs including:
- Card giving
- Sending gifts
- Going on dates
- Eating sweet treats
More modern customs include staying in with a takeaway and watching Netflix.
Church services also take place along novenas (9 days of set prayers).
I hope you've enjoyed this post!! I hope you have a nice Valentine's, however you choose to celebrate or go about your day!!
Blessings,
