Emporiblog - Flower Foraging
Hello all!! Today, we're going to have a little post about flower foraging!!
Spring is officially here! Leaves are returning to the trees and flowers are once again in bloom so, now is the perfect time to gather ingredients for your craft! However it's not that simple... There are rules for this sort of thing, both local and nature wise. Here's a quick guide for the Flower Foraging Witch....
Rule 1 - Be prepared
First and foremost, you need to make sure you're as prepared as possible and this includes:
- Clothing and changes of
- Safety precautions. Let someone know where you are going, take stuff with you to defend yourself, stay as close to paths as possible etc
- Take containers with you
- Know where you are going and what you're looking for!
- Know the weather
- Don't pick it if you don't know what it is!!
Rule 2 - Don't trespass
Trespassing is illegal for a reason. It doesn't matter if that specific place has exactly what you need, if it's on someone else's property, it stays on someone else's property!
Rule 3 - Don't take more than you need
Don't be greedy. Only take what you need and don't take so much that it'll disrupt the ecosystem. For example: there's only 3 of the flowers that you need. Do not take all 3, only take one at the most!
Rule 4 - Ask the plant before you pick it
Always ask the plant for permission first, before you pick it/harvest from it. You may want to practice this before you go foraging so you can understand the plants response/energy. This goes for fallen leaves/sticks/feathers too.
Rule 5 - Don't litter
Take your rubbish home with you and pick up after your animals!
Rule 6 - Respect your health
This ties in with knowing the weather. If you're easily susceptible to heat/sun stroke, go out early in the day or later in the evening (before dark of course) and wear appropriate clothing and bring water. If you're asthmatic or have seasonal allergies/pollen sensitivity, take medication with you and check the pollen count.
Rule 7 - Don't displace the wild life
Don't do anything to disrupt the wild life! They were there before you and it is their home. Be causious of birds, bees and wasps. Bees generally won't harm you unless they feel threatened but still, if you see a bee, let it do it's bee thing and move on before you continue 🐝.
Rule 8 - Give thanks
Always thank the plant for allowing you to use it. Either say thank you, give energy back or do something for the environment, like watering remaining plants if the soil is too dry (make sure dry soil is or isn't the preferred soil first), picking up litter or leaving seeds for birds (if allowed by local laws).
I think we'll leave this here!! If you do go foraging, remember to be careful and respect nature!!
Blessings and don't forget to stock up on suncream!!
