Symbol Series - Triquetra

Hello all!! Welcome to our second Symbol Series post: The Triquetra!! (Picture from ancient-symbols.com).

History

The Triquetra is thought to be an ancient Celtic Symbol that can be dated back to at least 500 BC and is thought of a symbol of protection, although there are some that claim it to be much older, as different variations of a triple knot symbol can be found as far back as 5,000 years ago. The name Triquetra comes from the Latin words Tri, meaning 3 and Quetrus, meaning cornered. Like most Celtic symbols, it was adopted by Christians, particularly in Ireland, and its meaning was changed to align with Christian values and symbolism. The symbol itself consists of 3 interwoven Vesica Pisces or 3 interconnected arches.

Meanings

The meaning of the Triquetra has changed over the years and has included some of the following:

- Maiden, Mother, Crone

- Air, Water, Earth

- Past, Present, Future

- Life, Death, Rebirth

- Love, Honour, Protect

It is also used to represent most things that have a 3 fold meaning.

Trivia

- Here are 2 of the most common ways to draw a Triquetra, the one pictured above is the most common and this is the other way (picture from ancient-symbols.com):

- Its exact origin is debatable as it has been found in, India, Persia and on Germanic and Lycian coins.

- The Triquetra is also a favourite of those who practice knot work and knot magic
