Easter
Hello all!! Easter is finally here!! I would like to note that I am also a big dumb dumb and yesterday's Flora Friday was supposed to be the Easter Lily, but I got my Fridays mixed up!!
Easter is a Christian festival that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus following his burial after being crucified by Romans (any Monty Python fans here?). The resurrection is said to have taken place 3 days after said burial. The date of Easter is not fixed and is different depending on whether you follow Eastern or Western Christianity. Other names include:
- Resurrection Sunday
- Pascha
Origins
The word Easter is actually derived from Δostre also known as Ostara and shares a lot of similarities with Ostara. Easter itself used to be a fixed festival but this caused an event known as the Paschal Controversies due to the differences between Western and Eastern practices and the Gregorian and Julian calendars and, wouldn't be resolved definitively until the 8th Century AD. After a lot of debate, the Council of Nicaea finally decided that Easter would be held on the first Sunday after the first Full Moon, after the Spring Equinox, in Western Christianity. In Eastern Christianity, the Julian calendar is 13 days ahead of ours and Easter cannot be celebrated before and/or during Passover.
Customs
Again, the customs of Easter change depending on whether you're Eastern or Western orthodox but Western customs include:
- Church services
- All night vigils
- The gifting of chocolate eggs/chocolate
- Egg decoration
- Easter egg hunts
- Baking breads
I think we'll leave this here!! Whether you celebrate today or not, don't eat all of your chocolate at once, I speak from experience!!
Blessings,
