Emporiblog - Maundy Thursday, Good Friday & Holy Saturday
Hello all!! We have a triple whammy of things to cover in this post because my dumb dumb brain forgot about the Full Moon on Saturday!! So, let's get into it....
What is Maundy Thursday?
Maundy Thursday takes place 3 days before Easter Sunday every year and is the 5th day of the Holy Week. It is the day that commemorates the washing of the feet and the Last Supper. The word Maundy is derived from the Latin word mandatum, which means command. Maundy Thursday is a yearly event but has no fixed date as the date of Easter always changes. The date also differs depending on whether you follow the Gregorian calendar or the Julian calendar. Other names include:
- Holy Thursday
- Great and Holy Thursday
- Covenant Thursday
- Thursday of Mysteries
- Shere/Sheer Thursday
I've always wondered about this one, I've seen the name on calendars for years but always forgot to ask what it meant!
What is Good Friday?
Good Friday comes after Maundy Thursday and is the commemoration of the crucifixion and death of Jesus. It takes place on the Friday before Easter but, again, has no fixed date and also changes depending on the Gregorian and Julian calendars. The transitions of Good Friday also differ depending on which church a person belongs to. Other names include:
- Holy Friday
- Great Friday
- Great and Holy Friday
- Black Friday
What is Holy Saturday?
Holy Saturday is the last day of the Holy Week and takes place on the day before Easter and commemorates the Harrowing of Hell while Jesus' body rested in the tomb. Again, the date differs depending on when Easter is and on the Gregorian and Julian calendars. Other names include:
- Sabbatum Sanctum
- Great and Holy Saturday
- The Great Sabbath
- Hallelujah Saturday
- Saturday of the Gloria
- Black Saturday
- Easter Eve
- Joyous Saturday
- The Saturday of Light
- Mega Sabbatun
I think we'll leave this here!! Easter is almost apon us, don't forget to check our post about Chocolate Magick incase you have some leftover!!
Blessings,
