Emporiblog - Witch Balls

Hello all!! Today's post is about Witch Balls!!

What are Witch Balls?

Witch Balls are a similar concept to Spell Jars (we have a post on those!) and have been used since the 1600s. Traditionally, they were hung in doorways or cottage windows to protect the home from negativity and evil spirits and were hollow glass sphears. It is also thought that Witch Balls were in fact, a precursor to modern baubles.

Modern Witch Balls

Nowadays, you don't have to have glass Witch Balls as glass is more expensive and very breakable! There is a cheaper, less breakable alternative and that is clear, plastic baubles (coincidence that we've come full circle 🤔)! You can get these online or in shops around Christmas time and they are reusable!

How to make a Witch Ball

Here's a rough guide to making a Witch Ball:

1 - Choose the purpose of the Ball e.g protection, new beginnings, fertility etc

2 - Get your Ball (make sure you can seal it up) and cleanse it using your preferred method

3 - Get your ingredients that correspond with your desired purpose (herbs, crystals etc)

4 - Put ingredients in the Ball. Depending on the size, you can use a funnel or make a funnel out of paper to save on mess

5 - Put the top back on and seal it with wax that corresponds to your purpose

Optional - tie rope around the top as well and add corresponding charms

Alternatively, if the Ball is clear glass, you can just fill the Ball with intention to keep the visual appeal of the Ball or if you're on a budget! (Credit to Wendy T for this observation!).

For those of you who partake in Christmas or Yule like festivities, hang your Witch Balls on your tree to bring the purpose of the Witch Ball into the new year.

I hope you've enjoyed this post!! There will be some Easter themed content coming as well as Beltane content coming your way!!
