Hello all!! Today's Flora Friday is Bigleaf Periwinkle!!


The Bigleaf Periwinkle (Vinca Major) is a species of flowering plant from the Apocynaceae family. Other names include:

- Large Periwinkle
- Greater Periwinkle
- Blue Periwinkle
- Big Periwinkle
- Large-leaved Periwinkle
- Periwinkle
- Sorcerer's Violet
- Flower of Death
- Variegated Periwinkle




Where To Find

The Bigleaf Periwinkle is native to the Western Mediterranean and can also be found from Southern Europe to Northern Africa; they can also be found in the lower Himalayan mountain ranges of Asia. It likes woodlands, hedgerows and riverbanks and can grow in sunlight and in shaded areas.




Edible Parts

THE PERIWINKLE IS POISONOUS! DO NOT CONSUME! It is also poisonous to cats, dogs and horses!!




Medical Uses

Despite being poisonous, the Bigleaf Periwinkle dies have medicinal uses, however, because of said poisonous aspects, I don't feel comfortable listing them. Contact an expert for more qualified advice than I can give.
