Flora Friday - Daffodil
Hello all!! Today's Flora Friday is Daffodil!!
Daffodils (Narcissus) are genus of plants that usually flower in Spring and are part of the Amaryllidaceae family. This specific Daffodil is Narcissus Pseudonarcissus, other names include:
- Tenby Daffodil
- Wild Daffodil
- Trumpet Narcissus
- Common Daffodil
- Lent Lily
- Yellow Daffodil
- Narcissus
- Jonquil
- Goose Leek
The Daffodil is the national flower of Wales and a national symbol of the new year in Iranian culture.
Where to find
Daffodils are mostly found in the Mediterranean in which the Iberian peninsula is the centre of diversity. Some species can be found in Southern France, Israel, Italy and the Balkans. In England, they are mostly an ornamental flower and can be commonly found in gardens, parks, public plant boxes and grassy areas.
Edible Parts
DAFFODILS ARE POISONOUS! DO NOT EAT THEM!! THEY ARE ALSO EXTREMELY TOXIC TO SOME ANIMALS (please check our animal safety posts). If you accidentally ingest some of the plant you may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and mouth irritation. These symptoms usually resolve themselves but if they persist or get worse, go to hospital!!
Medical Uses
Daffodils do have topical medical uses and have been used in folk medicine but because they are toxic, I don't think it's right to list them.
Take at your own risk and only after consulting specialists.
Magical Uses
In magical practices, Daffodils are used for:
- Luck
- Fertility
- Love
- Keeping away negative energy
- Friendship
- New beginnings
- Ostara rituals
- Beltane rituals
- Spring magicks
- Prosperity
