Flora Friday - Easter Lily
Hello all!! Today's Flora Friday is the Easter Lily!! Now, I know what you're thinking, Easter was last week and it's not close to the date of the Eastern Orthodox Easter; you are indeed correct on both points but, I got my Fridays mixed up and last week's was supposed to be this week's and visa versa!!
The Easter Lily (Amaryllis Belladonna) is a flowering plant in the Amaryllidaceae family. Other names include:
- Jersey Lily
- March Lily
- Belladonna Lily
- Naked Lady Lily
- Cape Lily
Where To Find
Amaryllis Belladonna is native to South Africa, specially Cape Province. It has become widely naturalised and is mostly used as an ornamental plant.
Edible Parts
This plant is slightly toxic to humans and can cause vomiting and diarrhea and while these symptoms go away on their own (depending on the amount ingested) it is advised to seek medical advice. If a child has consumed the plant, get to a hospital.
This plant is EXTREMELY poisonous to cats and dogs, do not have this plant if you have a cat or a dog!
Medical Uses
Amaryllis Belladonna does have medicinal uses however, due to its slightly toxic nature, I would not recommend taking the plant unless told to by a medical professional.
Magickal Uses
In magickal practices, Amaryllis Belladonna is used for:
- Creativity
- Joy
- Self acceptance
- Connection making
- Expression
I would also say that they can also be used in Ostara and Beltane Spells and rituals.
Victorian Flower Language
I can't find anything for Amaryllis Belladonna specifically but, Amaryllis means pride.

I hope you've enjoyed this post!! Again, sorry for the mix up but it's easily done, especially in my case!!
