Flora Friday - Primrose

Hello all!! Today's Flora Friday is Primrose!!


Primrose (Primula Vulgaris) is a species of plant that belongs to the Primulaceae family. Other names include:

- English Primrose
- Common Primrose


The Primrose features on one side of Austria's 5 Euro cent coin and was a personal favourite of English Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli .




Where To Find

The Primrose is native to the following:

- Western/Southern Europe
- Northwest Africa
- Parts of Southwest Asia

The Primrose can be found in open woodland areas, hedgerows, orchards, by streams and as an ornamental plant. It is also illegal to pick/remove Primrose in the UK (Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 Section 13, part 1b).




Edible Parts

Apparently, Primrose is edible! The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked and the flowers can be eaten raw as well, however, it does contain a chemical (Salycilates) which means that it cannot be consumed by those who are pregnant, have a blood thinning disorder or are on blood thinners, are allergic to paracetamol or are allergic to Primrose.

In various forms, Primrose can be used for:

- Skin ailments
- Headaches
- Relief from PMS symptoms
- Coughs
- Treating arthritis
- Rheumatism
- Insomnia
- Anxiety
- Digestive problems
- High blood pressure
- Reducing pain
