Flora Friday - Spring Crocus
Hello all!! Today's Flora Friday is Spring Crocus!!
Spring Crocus (Crocus Vernus) is a species of flowering plant from the Iridaceae family. Other names include:
- Common Crocus
- Ornamental Crocus
- Giant Crocus
Where To Find
Spring Crocus is native to the Alps, the Pyrenees and the Balkans. In England, the Spring Crocus can be found in grasslands, verges and churchyards.
Edible Parts
There are several species of Crocus, each of which has varying degrees of edibility so if you find a Crocus, it is best to take it to an expert.
Medical Uses
So, Saffron (from a different Crocus species) has medical uses, the flowers generally don't have uses. Some parts of other Crocuses do have medicinal properties, however, they should only be used after consulting an expert and your doctor!!
Magickal Uses
In magickal practices, Crocuses, in general, are used for:
- Love
- New beginningsbeginnings
- Imbolc
- Ostara
- Friendship
- Peace
- Settling disputes
- Divination
- Offerings (Aphrodite, Persephone)
Victorian Flower Language
In Victorian Flower Language, Crocus means youthful gladness.
