Emporiblog - Altar Items - Athame
Hello all!! We're retuning to our Altar Items series with Athame!!
An Athame or Athamé is a ceremonial blade, traditionally black handled, and an important tool in Witchcraft, Paganism and Satanic traditions. The main use of the Athame was started by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, for Banishing, and was later adopted by others.
What are Athames used for?
Aside from Banishing, Athames are mostly used to direct and channel energy and can also be used for representing the element of Fire
Do I have to have or use an Athame?
No. Athames are not mandatory and I know that not everyone can afford one. If you belong to a Coven, this may be different so I would check with your Coven and it's requirements!
From my understanding, it doesn't matter if you purchase your own, inherit one or get gifted one, however, depending on your practice/Coven there may be a consecration ritual of sorts for any Athame that you acquire
Despite being a knife of sorts, an Athame is for ceremonial, ritual and decorative uses and is usually not to be used to cut anything, draw blood and/or otherwise cause physical harm. Because of this, you may find that your own Athame is blunted in some way, either at the end or on the actual blade part. Mine, for example, is blunted at the end and the blade but I have a tiny one that is still relatively sharp.
If you have an Athame that you don't mind sharing, leave a picture in the comments!
I think we'll leave this here!! I hope you've enjoyed this post!!
Blessings,
