Emporiblog - Which Witch Closed Edition - Hoodoo
Hello all!! Today's Closed Edition is Hoodoo!!
DISCLAIMER: This is a closed practices and cannot be practiced by everyone, including myself! I have done my best to research as much as possible but since I cannot practice this, resources are limited.
Trigger Warning: Mentions of slavery and subjects thereof.
Not all practitioners identify as a Witch as the word Witch still has negative connotations to some.
Hoodoo, also known as Rootwork or Conjoure, is a practice that came to the world through African slaves, evolved from African traditions (and later Christian rituals) and has a very protective nature. Hoodoo is also very practical and adaptive as it allows a practitioner to incorporate their surroundings and environment into their craft for example; some Indigenous floral remedies were incorporated into Hoodoo and some practitioners in New Orleans also added Holy water and oils blessed by the Catholic church. It is very much an African American practice.
From my understanding, this practice is closed to anyone that doesn't have ancestral links to African Slavery and/or Africa itself and can only be practiced by Black people. There are also no specific Deities as such and any Deity worship is completely down to the individual practitioner, the main point of belief focus is in Spirits and life giving energies. Hoodoo doesn't share the same structure as an organised religion but it does have it's own version of rules, so to speak.
Unlike it's unjust portail in the media, Hoodoo has a lot of protective and positive qualities, including hex breaking and is a very personal craft.
If you are unsure of anything, respectfully ask a Hoodoo practitioner as they can give you more information than I can as I cannot practice Hoodoo.
I think we'll leave this here!! The history of Hoodoo is a lot more vast and richer than what I have touched apon. Researching Hoodoo is a good way to avoid appropriation!
If anything I have stated in this post is incorrect or if I have missed anything, please let me know so I can ammend it immediately!
Blessings,
