I have briefly mentioned the 3 Fold Law in other posts and those of you who have been practicing for a while will have undoubtedly heard of it but, for those just starting out, this post will help clear up a few things.....
What is the 3 Fold Law?
The 3 Fold Law (also called the Rule of 3, the Law of Return and Threefold Law) is a belief that a practitioners sent out energy, benevolent or malevolent, will be returned to them 3 fold as a sort of karma
Where does the 3 Fold Law come from?
It comes primarily from Wicca and was first mentioned in 1949 in the book: High Magic's Aid by Gerald Gardner, however, it wasn't listed as an actual "law" until the 60s by Raymond Buckland.
Do I have to abide by the 3 Fold Law?
The general answer is no. You do not have to abide by this; it's more of an "ethical guideline" than an actual rule. But, if you're looking to join a Coven, especially a Wiccan one, it is possible that the 3 Fold Law might be one of the Coven's rules so I would check those before joining
When I first started out over a decade ago, I was told about the 3 Fold Law and karma and I abided by them as I thought that that was what I had to do, but, now that I'm starting over and slowly coming back into the craft, I've done my research and have found that the 3 Fold Law doesn't fit in with where I eventually want my practice to go.
If you do adhere to the 3 Fold Law, that is your prerogative and part of your individual practice and I will respect that.
