Elements Series - Earth

Hi guys,

Going back to the roots (pardon the pun) of this week today and coming down to earth (I'll get my coat.....)

So, this could well be a long post, as I am going to try and cover a lot of sub-topics in one day!

Remember, this is following on from our earlier elements post.

Altar Items:

Altar items that can be used to represent the element of Earth are:
  • Salt - used for a long time (it is where the word 'salary' come from, people used to be paid in salt!!) Also used in purification rituals.
  • Various plants, especially root vegetables. These can be changed with the season, Sabbat or depending on why you have created the altar - think Harvest Festivals.
  • A jar of dirt - unfortunately without Johnny Depp, but you can use a bowl or other container of dirt, especially useful in fertility rituals.
  • Crystals, see yesterday's post.
  • Witch's Knot (link)
  • Pentacle - although I do think that a pentacle represents ALL elements. Link
You can always do 'combination' items too, think last week's Water post, and this week's Earth post, well, salt water can be used for purification and blessings, for example.

Animals:

Animals said to represent the Earth element are:
  • Horse
  • Worm
  • Mole
  • Coyote (CLOSED PRACTICE, the whole animal, including bones and spirit are part of a closed practice!!)
  • Ant
  • Pig
  • Goat
  • Wolf
  • Rat
  • Squirrel
  • Deer
  • Cow
  • Dog

Magical Creatures: (oooh, yet another series....??)

Magical creatures and beings to represent Earth are:
  • Brownies
  • Dwarves
  • Piskies (a Cornish thing!!)
  • Garden Fae
  • Trolls
  • Dryads
  • Giants

Deities:

  • Asase Ya (Bono - African)
  • Geb (Egyptian)
  • Ala (Igbo - African)
  • Alusi (Igbo spirits)
  • Zemyna (European)
  • Danu (Irish Gaelic)
  • Cel (Etruscan - Pre-Roman Italy)
  • Gaia (Greek)
  • Demeter (Greek)
  • Tellus (Roman)
  • Ceres (Roman)
  • Nerthus (Germanic)
  • Papahānaumoku (Hawaiian) - and yes, I copy and pasted that one!!
  • Papa (Maori)
  • Mama Pacha (Incan)
  • Tlaltecuhtli (Aztec) - another copy and paste one!!

  • Bhumi (Hindu)
  • Privthi (Hindu)
  • Ki (Sumerian)
  • Mokosh (Slavic)

This is by no means an exhaustive list, I have missed many out I am sure, and I apologise if I have left out any deity that you may honour.

I will cover Earthing on Saturday as tomorrow is Flora Friday.

I hope you have found this post useful. Anything else you would like covered, please let us know in the comments.
