Hallowe'en Season - Haunted Places - Borley Rectory

Hi Guys,

I thought that I would kick-start our Haunted places series with a place once described as 'the most haunted place in England' that I have been fascinated with since I was a child - Borley Rectory.

The Rectory was built in 1862 for, oddly enough, the Rector of the Borley Parish. It was badly damaged by fire in 1939 which led to it being demolished in 1944.

Reportedly haunted since it was built, reports of supernatural events increased after a visit by renowned Paranormal researcher Harry Price in 1929.

Reported events include:

  • Footsteps
  • Ghostly nun seen at twilight
  • Phantom coach drawn by headless horsemen
  • Discovery of a skull
  • Servant's bells ringing, despite not being connected
  • Lights appearing in windows
  • Poltergeist activity, such as bricks, vases and other objects being thrown
  • Windows shattering
  • Wall-writing
  • Locking people in rooms when there is no key
  • People being thrown from their beds
  • Apparition of a monk
  • Apparition of a headless man
  • Spontaneous fires starting

Many of the phenomena have been disproved, some of it was made-up to cover up an extra marital affair!
Harry Price himself has been the victim of several smear campaigns, but continues to still be highly regarded in paranormal research circles today, even though he died in 1948.

It has been reported that even up to the present day, there continues to be a ghostly apparition of a nun seen both on the site of the former Rectory (now houses) and in the nearby churchyard.

There has been a film made about it, although I have yet to see it, several books =have been published on it, and a quick internet search calls up photos of supposed apparitions all pictured at or near the Rectory.

If I have missed anything out, please let me know in the comments below.
