Emporiblog - Leaf Magick

Hello all! I've been a bit tied up researching various things but here is a post that is not Tarot or Moon based!

What is Leaf Magick?

Leaf Magick is simply using leaves in your practice in a variety of ways

Where do I get leaves from?

Personally, I get mine from the back garden once they've fallen and I give thanks by feeding the birds that live in the trees. You can get leaves from anywhere but always check your sources, do not trespass, do not import species invasive or illegal to your area and do not take from places where you are not allowed to

How can I use leaves in my practice?

First, foremost and most importantly, research the type of leaf you want to use! Some leave are poisonous or toxic, some are sharp and some are toxic to animals. Some leaves are also only toxic if burned so make sure you know what you're handling!

- The most popular way of using leaves in witchcraft is using a bay leaf in manifestation work by writing what you desire to manifest on it then burning it. This theoretically could work for any leaf as long as you research it and it's properties

- You can use them whole, crushed/cut, fresh or dry. Dried leaves are easier to burn and crush and crushed/cut leaves are easier to store. Whole fresh leaves would be better for offerings and symbolism

- Eco friendly spell wrapping! If you bury your spells or need to bury one, you can use use leaves to wrap up your spell! They won't harm the environment and will naturally biodegrade. Fresh leaves would be better for this as dried ones may crack and crumble

To round off this section, it would be a good idea to see if you can find out what trees are around you. This will make the identification process easier and will make it easier to research. If you have evergreens in your area, you will need to be patient as they don't shed leaves like other trees, new "leaves" do replace the old ones and nesting birds do dislodge branches but collecting lots of needles will be tedious and some of the points above may not be possible. I would also recommend washing what you gather or at least just wipe off the leaves a little bit

Why should I use leaves in my practice?

I personally think that leaves, as a whole, are overlooked. If you have trees near you, you have a supply of ingredients as long as you go about it the right way! Autumn is also a great time to stock up on leaves, unless you're surrounded by evergreens, as loads of leaves fall around that time and make for easy collection. You also don't need a lot of fancy ingredients. Witches/practitioners before us used what was around them and this is a perfect example of that

I think we'll leave this here, a bit of a short and sweet one! As always, check your local laws before foraging, never take more than what you need and always give thanks!

Blessings,
