Emporiblog - Bibliomancy

Hello all! Today, we're looking at Bibliomancy!

What Is Bibliomancy?

Bibliomancy is a form of divination that uses books, sometimes specific books and variations of it can be found in many different practices around the world. Traditionally, books designed for this kind of divination and Holy texts such as the Bible have been used as well as the Qur'an, which had specific passages for divination in Iran, Turkey and India

There is a subcategory of this called Rhapsodomancy, which uses poems to accomplish the same thing

Methods

There are a couple of way to go about using Bibliomancy, let's have a look at some of them:

Method One - If you walk past a bookshelf or place where books are kept and a book falls down, either on the shelf or off the shelf, then that book is trying to tell you something. If it falls and is closed, pick up the book and close your eyes. Open the book and let your finger skim across the page until it stops. The word or first complete sentence you land on is your message

Method 2 - Very similar to method 1 except the book doesn't fall beforehand. You can use a specific book or a randomly selected book. Simply close your eyes, open the book and skim the page and the word, first complete sentence or passage/paragraph you land on is your answer

Method 3 - I can already feel my mother cringing at this method... For this method, you select a book, open it and turn it around so the pages are facing the floor and drop it. Pick the book up where the pages opened and the first word or complete sentence at the top of the page is your answer (be careful with this method so you don't damage your books!)

Out of all of the divination methods I've seen, this one appears to be one of the easier ones and will be able to be used by those still in the broom closet

There are modern versions of books specifically designed for this sort of thing which consist of a book having only single words or a single sentence on the page. If you're feeling adventurous, you could even make your own!

Now, for our kindle users and for those of us who like to scroll on our phones, firstly, don't drop your device! If you're scrolling, just simply scroll through the text and tap on the screen to stop. The first word or complete sentence is your answer. I'm not sure how kindles and eBooks work so I cannot advise

I think we'll leave this little post here! I think I may start preparing one on Tasseomancy (tea leaves) but that is going to take a long time to do...

Blessings,
