How To Turn Your Christmas Tree Into A Ward
Hello all! The festive season is definitely apon us so it makes sense to make use of a Christmas staple! I am well aware that most will already have the tree up but it'll do for next year!
The Christmas tree, or Yule tree, can be found in most homes around this time in various sizes and colours (the one in our house is black!) as well as being an actual tree in some cases. So, let's have a look at how to turn this festive staple into a temporary ward!
The Tree Itself
There are 3 types of actual tree that are more commonly used and they are:
- Pine
- Fir
- Spruce
All of which fall into the conifer category.
And each tree has it's own associations, which can strengthen your ward, depending on the purpose of said ward:
- Pine - Healing, Mental clarity, Cleansing, Fertility, Prosperity, Money, Yule rituals, Protection, Purification
- Fir - New beginnings, Growth, Energy, Healing, Determination, Protection, Shadow work
- Spruce - Protection, Peace, Friendship, Happiness, Kindness, Communication
A note: THE NEEDLES OF ALL OF THESE TREES ARE TOXIC TO CATS IF THEY EAT THEM! THE NEEDLES WILL ALSO DAMAGE ORGANS IF INGESTED (KEEP THE NEEDLES AWAY FROM ALL PETS)
Now, if you opt for or have a synthetic tree, you may have found that these come in different colours. I have seen:
- Green (the obvious one)
- Black
- Pink
- Light blue
- White
Of course, if you cannot find a specific colour tree, out is easier and cheaper to find coloured decorations! For colour associations, see the post below 👇🏻
Now, on to the warding! We'll be doing two separate guides, one for artificial trees and one for actual trees.
Artificial Trees
- The first thing you need to do is cleanse your tree which you can do in the box or once you've put it up. I would recommend incense or giving it a good shake (very satisfying after fighting to put it up!)
- Next sit with your tree a moment to set your intentions and purpose
- Once done, add your decorations, which can also boost your intentions depending on colour
As wards need to be boosted and replenished, I would recommend enchanting your lights so that when you turn them on, it will boost the ward or cleanse with incense
Actual Trees
- The same as the section above, cleanse but if you're going to shake it, do so before you bring the tree home. This will also get rid of loose needles
- Sit with the tree, set intentions and purpose
- Decorate!
Replenishing this ward will be easy to do. You can enchant your lights or, since you will need to water this tree, use moon water. As a bonus, you can paint runes and sigils on the container that will hold your tree

You can also use a verbal incantation
I would also class wreaths as a decoration and say that they can be used in Threshold Magick as well!
